One Year and Counting

It’s been a year of living during COVID-19. We’re all mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. But we’re a powerful, strong and resilient bunch. It’s important to take a moment and pause to reflect on how far we’ve come. Many of us have grown in unexpected ways. Have you thought about what you’ve learned about yourself this year? What new skills and muscles have you developed? Have you taken up new hobbies, learned new forms of self-care?

ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Peer Mentorship Program!

The Girls Are Powerful is pleased to announce that we will soon be launching the Peer Mentorship Program Pilot. We believe young girls need mentors who model the diversity of women’s everyday lives so they can look up to real-life role models, not influencers and people from mainstream media.

The Peer Mentorship Program connects girls and young women with peer mentors and adult sponsors who will challenge them to discover their uniqueness, acknowledge their essence, build their esteem, and embrace their power. Girls deserve mentors who demonstrate the many different ways women can break free from stereotypes and be strong, smart, bold and powerful. We are so excited to launch this program! We will talk more about the Peer Mentorship Program on Girls Are Powerful Day at which point we will share a registration link.

SAVE THE DATE: Girls Are Powerful Day

We are planning a great day of activities for our very first Girls Are Powerful Day – Spring Into Your Greatness on May 22, 2021. Would you like to facilitate a session or be an emcee?  Let us know! Registration opens at the end of the month.

Mother-Daughter Event Concludes

Thank you to all our speakers and participants for joining us for our Anchoring our Love and Strength, Mother-Daughter Event Series. We took an incredible journey, and it was a ride of togetherness and love! If you weren’t able to make this event, we hope you will join us in the future (maybe it will even be in person!!)

What Do You Think About Our Book?

Do you read lots of children’s books? Do you feel like you’re an expert? If so, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Get a sneak peek of the GRP story by completing our short survey and providing your feedback. This survey is for parents/caregivers and their daughters, so get together and enjoy our new GRP story!  Participate in our focus group here.

Keep Getting Tested

We want to remind you to get tested every two weeks if you have a child attending in-person classes. For the safety of school staff and our children, we encourage all families to keep getting tested for COVID-19 so we can safely continue in-person classes. You can visit a community testing site, order an at-home test kit, or get tested through your healthcare provider. All options are quick, easy, and free to you.

The Vaccine Connector

Don’t forget to sign up for the Minnesota COVID-19 Vaccine Connector! This is a tool that helps you find out when, where, and how to get your COVID-19 vaccine. All Minnesotans should sign up, regardless of whether they are currently eligible to get vaccinated. Go to mn.gov/vaccineconnector to sign up.

Vaccine eligibility has expanded!

See this graphic to determine whether or not you’re eligible to get your vaccine! If you are, head over to the Vaccine Connector to get yourself scheduled. Questions? Head to the Minnesota Department of Health ‘s FAQ here: https://www.health.state.mn.us/…/coron…/vaccine/basics.html…

April’s Theme is Self-love

Are you practicing self-love? It’s a term that has been used a lot lately and it might mean different things for different people. At Girls Are Powerful, we believe self-love means creating an environment where you feel you can make mistakes, grow and thrive. It also means practicing self-kindness and positive self-talk. After all:

“Your greatest responsibility is to love yourself and to know that you are enough.”

Fun Facts to Recognize Women’s History Month:
  1. Did you know that each Women’s History Month has its own theme? The theme of 2021’s Women’s History Month: Women Refusing to be Silenced! We ❤️ this theme!
  2. Did you know that the process to get us to an entire month of Women’s History Month has been a process of over 100 years? Since the first Women’s History Day in 1909, we’ve transitioned to a Women’s History Week and eventually got to the month-long celebration we know today!
  3. Would you have guessed that Wyoming was the first place in the US to grant every woman the right to vote in 1869? It took nearly 100 years before ALL women, including BIPOC women, got the right to vote through the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
  4. Women have had many “firsts” that deserve to be celebrated. Sally Ride was the first astronaut. Marie Curie was the first (and only!) woman to win two Nobel prizes. Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And Now, Kamala Harris is the first woman VP!
Wonder Woman: Megan Markle

Megan Markle has been in the news a lot lately for the controversy with the royal family. She has experienced endless bullying, harassment, and racism since her relationship with Prince Harry was announced. Girls Are Powerful sends our love and support to Meghan and as she navigates this challenging time of media attention and scrutiny.

With our new Youth Advisory Board members fully on board, we are gearing up for an exciting couple of months!

Here’s a few things we’ve got in the hopper:

Girl Talk! Powerful Conversations for Powerful Girls

Girl Talk is a brand new speaker series to learn about different careers. Once a month,  YAB members will sit down with professionals in mental health, fashion, STEM, journalism, and more to talk about the speaker’s journey.  Each Girl Talk will highlight a YAB value. The YAB value featured for our March Girl Talk is Commitment.  Is there a topic you or your teen is interested in learning more about? Let us know by emailing our Youth Advisory Lead, Maddy at  maddy@girlsarepowerful.org

YAB! Book! Club!

We’re starting a book club for girls 12-18 and we couldn’t be more excited about it! We will read a different book each month from a different genre and will meet virtually at the end of the month to discuss. Keep an eye out for an interest form to join soon!

Spring Activity Coloring Sheet

The YAB will soon launch spring-themed coloring sheets with the prompt: “This spring, I’m doing [blank] to stay safe, and next year I look forward to doing [blank].” There will be four different coloring sheets to choose from. We will share them out on Facebook soon as soon as they’re ready!
