Light At the End of the Tunnel

A new year is just around the corner, and with it the hope of a vaccine, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. There’s a saying that the last 10% of a race is always the hardest, and that’s what we’re coming up against now. We’re at the last part of an incredibly hard marathon; we’re exhausted and ready to done. But, we have to finish strong and must be vigilant to avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus. The number of available ICU hospital beds around the country are dwindling as the rate of COVID-19 infections spread. Continue to exercise caution and stay strong. The finish line is in sight.

You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.

WINTER BREAK ACTIVITIES

Coloring & Art Project Challenge: December 19 – January 3
This Winter Break, we’re encouraging youth, ages 6-17, to join us in our coloring and art project challenge: Everything I Need Is Already Within Me. Did you know, coloring has been proven to help reduce stress and anxiety? It helps calm your brain down, just like meditation. It helps you get rid of negative thoughts and take in positivity! For these reasons, we are hosting a coloring and art project challenge.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Download and print our coloring sheet here. Or, do an art project that addresses the prompt, “Everything I Need Is Already Within Me.”
  • Color a page or create your art project with anything you like, paints, crayons, glitter glue, stickers, colored pencils, etc.
  • Take a picture of your finished art project or coloring page and submit it by January 3, along with an answer to three questions:
  1. What makes your coloring page or art project special?
  2. What does “Everything I need is already within me” mean to you and how have you demonstrated that in your coloring page or art project?
  3. How can you encourage other girls to tap into their inner strength?

Embrace Your Power Through Music: K-Pop Edition

Join us for Embrace Your Power Through Music: K-Pop Edition. Like art, music has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, improve memory, and even increase happiness. Making and listening to music helps you express your interests, change your mood, and tap into your creativity.

This December 30 at 4:00pm CST, girls aged 12-18 are invited to join us to talk about the ins and outs of K-pop. K-pop is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. It is influenced by styles and genres from around the world, such as experimental, rock, jazz, hip hop, R&B, electronic dance, folk, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots.  We’ll discuss favorite groups, favorite songs, and so much more! Hope to see you on Zoom!  Register here.

New Quarantine Guidance

For months, CDC had recommended a quarantine period of 14 days for people exposed to someone with COVID-19. Last week, CDC announced an update to that long-standing guidance that includes options for 10-day or seven-day quarantines under certain conditions.

  • If you must quarantine, the safest option is to stay away from others for 14 days.
  • If someone in your home has COVID-19, stay away from others for 14 days.
  • You may end your quarantine after 10 days, or after seven days with a negative COVID-19 test result if you do not have any symptoms and have not had a positive test for COVID-19.
  • You cannot end your quarantine before seven days for any reason.

10-Day Quarantine

Spread Holiday Cheer, Not COVID-19

One day, you might very well find yourself telling your grandchildren about how you spent your COVID-19 Holidays and New Years. So why not find a fun, safe and memorable way to celebrate with friends and family. Maybe it’s time to try virtual trivia or a game night. Host a virtual gathering with friends and family and play the night away. Add prizes, challenges and make it a night to remember! Many websites and apps have free games that can be played virtually. And, the best part is everyone is safe and no one has to drive home.

 Avoid Travel

COVID-19 loves to travel and meet new people. Don’t give it ride this holiday season. Staying home is the only way you can be sure you aren’t giving it to or getting it from someone. Traveling increases the chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. This holiday season, do not travel out of state or have family travel into Minnesota to join a holiday celebration. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others.

We’ve completed the Your Wellbeing Matters 2.0 series and are so grateful for all of our movement specialists and experts who joined us for these events. We couldn’t do this important work without you, so thank you for your support!

Empower Hour

In case you missed any of our Empower Hours, you can access them anytime here. We recently had a very timely conversation with Adriene Thortan, a registered nurse,  who talked to us about managing being home for the holidays. You can check out her session here

Power Move

Over the past few months, we’ve introduced our followers to all kinds of new and fun types of movement. We’ve done IntenSati, Zumba, QiGong, Igbu dance, barre and more. We hope to continue to offer exciting movement opportunities to our community in 2021, so keep an eye out for upcoming announcements. In the meantime, if your workout routine is getting stale, try one of our past classes here. Remember, new movement builds new muscles.

Embody Empowerment

These past months have felt like a time warp. Days feel like they are simultaneously crawling and flashing by. We’re in a strange place where all the days feel the same and yet, we still can’t plan anything to change them because we’re in a state of near-constant change. It’s hard. During this time, try to focus on being strong and healthy. Try a new activity, read about a crazy topic you know nothing about, find ways to make the days feel different. We’re all in this time warp together.

Wonder Person

We have to recognize how awesome Elliot Page’s recent announcement is. Just recently, Page came out as transgender and non-binary on social media. Page said he now prefers the pronouns he/him and they/them pronouns and said, “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.” Elliot Page has shared that he will no longer identify as a woman, and we have to recognize that he is a visible queer person, incredible actor, and inspiring figure. Page is well known for their leading role in “Juno” and Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.”

The Youth Advisory Board is still hard at work leading projects from ideation to completion. We couldn’t be prouder of this group of young women for learning and demonstrating such amazing leadership and project management skills. You can find more about the Youth Advisory Board here.

Just Wear It Campaign 2.0

With this next big spike in COVID-19 cases, the YAB has launched the Just Wear It Campaign 2.0 to encourage us all to wear masks. This time, the campaign has a winter theme. And why not? Surely we’ve all noticed how nice and warm masks make your nose when it’s freezing out!

COVID Conversations Pamphlet

By now, we’ve all been there. We’ve been standing in line or at a store and people are just not respecting your space. The YAB put together the COVID Conversation Pamphlet about how to have those hard conversations with people who aren’t following COVID-19 safety guidance.  You can find the conversation helper here.

Mind, Body and Soul Initiative: We are so excited to unveil our playlist for our Mind, Body and Soul Initative. The YAB carefully curated these playlists to help with meditation or studying, working out, or just calming music. Check it out here.
