Mother-Daughter Event Update

This past week, the Mother Daughter Event Committee made the difficult decision to postpone our Mother Daughter event. We now plan to host this incredible event in mid January of 2021. Her Voice Matters Campaign | Looking for Brand Ambassadors!

Today, GRP is devoted to helping all girls find their voice as a way to create meaningful change in our communities and in our world.  As part of the year end initiatives, we are launching the Her Voice Matters Campaign in support of helping others find their voice. It’s only when we feel confident in who we are – when we find our voice – that we find our power and truly come together to create something bigger than our individual selves. As a part of this initiative we are launching our Brand Ambassador Program.

We are looking for individuals who possess a desire and a commitment to empower and encourage the lives of the next generation of girls by helping them find their voice. Do your values include personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a passion for improving the lives of women and girls in our community? If so, consider applying to become a brand ambassador for GRP! This is a great opportunity to help girls find their voice and create change in our communities. If you’d like to learn more, please check out the website and apply.

How to enjoy Halloween this year

The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping how we celebrate holidays, including Halloween. But it doesn’t mean Halloween this year can’t still be spooky and fun! Traditional door to door trick or treating is discouraged and considered a high-risk activity. Think about doing other low-risk activities like organizing a neighborhood pumpkin carving contest, holding a Halloween scavenger hunt with your family, or enjoying a scary movie Halloween night complete with scary looking snacks! Check out this list of CDC Halloween activities.

Flu shots are more important than ever – don’t wait!

While it is unclear how the pandemic will affect the flu season, MDH and CDC are preparing for a “twindemic,” when COVID-19 and seasonal flu spread simultaneously. Two potentially fatal viruses circulating at the same time could burden the state’s health care system and result in many illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. So please, get your flu vaccine now!

We have reached the halfway point of our Your Wellbeing Matters 2.0 FREE virtual series.  If you haven’t yet joined us, don’t wait! We have a great line up ahead.

VOTE and make your voice heard!

One of the greatest things you can do this month to embody empowerment is to vote. The fight for women’s right to vote was long and hard The suffragette movement lasted over a century. It wasn’t until August 18, 1920, that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, giving all white American women the same rights and responsibilities of citizenship as men. However, it wasn’t until the Voting Rights Act 1965 that black women were finally able to exercise their right to vote. Now in 2020, Black women are running for Congress in record numbers.

We must do everything in our power to vote and make our voices heard this election, please vote and encourage those around you to vote too! A few tips for voting:

  • Vote by mail:
    • Ask for a mail in ballot here – do it now if you haven’t already!
    • Send your ballot in as soon as you can.
    • Make sure your signature is as close to the one on your drivers license or ID as possible.
    • Track your ballot and make sure it is counted!

If you experience any type of voter intimidation call 1-877-600-VOTE! Put it in your phone now!

Wonder Worker

We want to highlight Black Garnet Books as our local Wonder Worker. They are a black, woman-owned bookstore in the Twin Cities who focus on stocking Adult and YA literature by black and racially diverse authors. Since we’re talking about voting, this is a great spot to check out if you’re looking to brush up on your suffragette history or if you just want a good read: https://bookshop.org/shop/blackgarnetbooks
